We have completed the framework for the Healthy and Sustainable Pre-School Scheme. We have been working with this scheme since 2012 and it has proved to be invaluable in improving our practice at nursery in many areas.
The topics that we have covered have included:
This framework and support has enabled us to receive staff training (such as Busy Feet, Design to Smile, Cooking Together) and has provided many ideas and suggestions that we have implemented at nursery that have improved the quality of care and education that we provide.
The scheme has also linked us with other schemes, such as Health Workplace Award, Gold Snack Award and Sun Safe Status.
All of these different schemes that we participate in provide expert advice and a framework that we implement at nursery.
For example, when we first started the Healthy and Sustainable Scheme the framework suggested implementing a policy that would guide our practice for nutrition, oral health and special dietary requirements which is where our Food and Drink and Oral Health Policies originated from.
We will be re-assessed to ensure that our practice doesn’t change and that we are still encompassing the ethos of the scheme in our everyday practice.
We have recently implemented this initiative in nursery with much success. The aim is to encourage children to brush their teeth once a day at nursery. Evidence shows regular use of a ‘family’ fluoride-containing toothpaste helps reduce the need for fillings and extractions.
Our nursery programme is organised in a safe and effective way. There is a lead person in our nursery who is responsible for the toothbrushing programme.
Staff have been given a detailed training programme and checks are carried out at least once a term against national standards of best practice.
A ‘family’ fluoride toothpaste containing 1350-1500 parts per million (ppm) fluoride is used in the programme for over 3’s. A small pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is used.
A toothpaste containing 1000 ppm fluoride is used for under 3’s. A small smear of fluoride toothpaste is used.
Correct use of the appropriate age fluoride toothpaste has been proven to make the teeth more resistant to acid attacks and therefore works to reduce dental decay.
